Common Queries from Potential Screeners
"What Qualifications do I need?"
You need to be a registered Health Professional with training and experience in identifying potential melanomas and skin cancers.
"What are your protocols?"
Our screeners just screen! If they see anything that needs further investigation, they encourage the person to follow up with their GP (they can say “as soon as possible” or “at your next routine appointment”, but there is no discussion of diagnosis, prognosis or treatment)
"But it's really hard not to go into detail!"
Yes, we do understand that, but we are only a screening service and to go beyond those parameters starts taking us outside of our clinical framework. Staying within those parameters protects everyone.
“I don’t know if my insurance covers me as a volunteer”
As an organization, we have had GPs and Nurses approach their respective insurance providers to confirm that their insurance covers them doing voluntary work as long as they are working within their ‘scope of practice’. We also do everything we can to protect our screeners and mitigate risk, which is why we have robust protocols in place.
“I don’t know if I’m comfortable not following through and making clinical notes”
A lot of potential screeners worry about this, but think of it as this scenario… If you were stood with a group of people and you saw a suspicious mole on someone’s ear or neck, would you ignore it or suggest they see their GP?
Our screeners provide a formalised version of this scenario!
