How do I book a skin cancer screening?

Search the Calendar for an Event near you.  Click on it to find out how to access screening at that event.  Please note that not all events have on-line bookings.

What should I expect during a screening?

SCREENING FAQS

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive 10 minutes before your designated appointment time

Can I have a support person with me?

Absolutely! We encourage attendees to have a person with them in the screening room to chat to during their screening.

Do I need to be well to attend a screening?

Within reason! Whilst having a cough or a cold will not directly affect your skin check, we wish to protect the health of our volunteers on the bus, so if you are very ill, please cancel as early as possible. If you are asked to wear a mask by our volunteers, please do so.

Can I wear makeup or nail polish to my screening?

No. Clients are asked not to wear makeup or nail polish, as this may interfere with the effectiveness of the screening.

What should I wear?

You are advised to wear loose fitting clothes that can be quickly removed down to underwear and replaced in the screened cubicle on the bus.  This will help us to maximise the efforts of our volunteers with the time they have available.

Who conducts the screenings?

All screenings are carried out by qualified medical practitioners or retired GPs with prior experience in dermatoscopy, who volunteer their time.  Our retired GPs working without a current practice certificate are NOT practicing medicine as registered health practitioners but are using their skills to offer advice to you.

What does the screening involve?

The screening is a full body visual check to identify any suspect freckles or moles.

Will I receive a diagnosis during the screening?

No. Screeners do not provide diagnosis or prognosis. They look for suspect freckles or moles they feel require further investigation by a GP.

What happens if a suspect mole or freckle is found?

If a screener identifies a suspect mole or freckle:

•       A photo may be taken using your cell phone so you can show your GP.

AND/OR

•       You will receive a sheet of paper indicating the placement of the suspect freckle or mole.

How can I volunteer with Lions Cancer Trust?

Visit our 'Get Involved' page for more information

Can you bring the mobile unit to our workplace or event?

Our screening bus is hosted in communities by local Lions Clubs who work hard to source local volunteer screeners and create great screening events. If you would like the bus in your community, contact your local Lions, or even BETTER, join them!
